Date With A Dog
Recently all my boys went camping with the guys from church. That left an opportunity to have a date with Canon to the pet store. While there they were kicking off the summer with a beach theme and complimentary pet photos. It appears that even our dog can smile on command!
Move Over Lance! Tour de Mesa [Mesa Professional Photography]
I really hadn't planned on blogging about my husband's latest conquest but I couldn't help myself. Last year he trained and participated in the Tour de Tucson in Tucson, Arizona. He really hadn't planned or trained for the Tour de Mesa last weekend and was a last minute entry. We're so glad he did though. Drumroll............ he finished 13th place!!! We love jumping around and acting weird when he crosses that finish line!
Books Vol 5 [Mesa, Gilbert Professional Photography]
I mentioned in January that I've made a goal of trying to read 3 books a month: for my book group, for me, and for my business. It's turning out to be harder than I thought, but I'm hanging in there. Here's what I read for February.
The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. by Sandra Gulland. This is the first book in a trilogy about the young Josephine Bonaparte. We meet Rose, (she was later renamed by Napoleon,) on her family's sugar plantation in Martinico, where an old island woman her she will one day be queen. This is the first book in a trilogy and I may just have to read the other two now! I found her to be absolutely fascinating!
The E-Myth Revisted by Michael E Gerber. Business books. I think they are going to be the death of me. I try. I really do. And this one gets such rave reveiews. I just don't think I'm meant to immerse myself in business books for pleasure. The one thing I did get out of it was how important it is to systemize everything in your business! Taking time to systemize now help ensure that your business does not own you and your life. Bottom line- do you find yourself typing the same email over and over? Create a template of that email and be done with it.
Jane & the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron. Considered historical mystery. There's a new genre for you. For everyone that loves Jane Austen... this series is what happens if Jane had wrote mystery novels. I love her use of the word 'Unpleasantness' in the title and can Jane do any wrong? I think not.
Happy reading!

I have always had a love for genealogy. There is something that fascinates and captivates me about how people might have lived their lives so many years before I was ever even a thought. I wish I knew the day to day activities about them. And between you and me world wide web, I sometimes like to pretend what those stories might be. There is a really great resource in case you have a hankering for all things.... well, today we would call them 'vintage.' If you have a few minutes go check out FamilySearch.org and click on the 'learn' tab to get started. And here's to finding out you are not alone!
Published! [Mesa, Gilbert Professional Photographer]
Well..... sort of. Remember I shared this post about going to Prescott to shoot landscapes with the Arizona Professional Photographers Association?
Our group stayed at the historical Hassayampa Inn. During our stay, they asked if we would take some time to take images around the the hotel and submit them. I blogged about my image submissions here, only I never mentioned they had been submitted.
I was recently notified that my images had been selected! You can see all the submitted images here. I big thank you from Penny and her team! I'll be sure to tweet from there when Hunky Boyfriend and I enjoy our 2 night stay, courtesy of the Hassayampa!

Just some ramblings for the week. C'mon world wide web, doesn't everyone know this rule?!
Admit it, we're all guilty!
Hmmm, I seem to have a recurring theme here, but this is the best invention EVER!
Hassayampa Inn- Prescott [Destination Professional Photographer]
I was recently in Prescott for an AZPPA event. Everyone stayed at the fabulous Hassayampa Inn. This placed just oozed historic. I'll post later about the event itself, but during some down time, I indulged myself for a self guided tour!
I couldn't tell you how old this piano is, but it's so old it says, "do not play."
There is a case full of items from when the hotel first opened in 1927 including ledgers and bills.
Original switchboard. Who else is channelling Lily Tomlin's, Ernestine, the telephone operator! One ringy dingy....
Now I'm wishing I had taken a wide shot of the original 1927 crank elevator is still in use today.
It's Haunted!
Since then, countless hotel guests and employees have reported encounters with a young woman throughout the hotel—crying at the end of a bed, dressed in a pink gown in the hallway, appearing and disappearing from rooms. One housekeeper saw a woman by a bed, holding flowers and crying. When asked if she needed help, the woman vanished. Kitchen staff have reported feeling Faith’s presence in the kitchen, right before the burners on the stove suddenly went out.
Others have reported strange cold spots in Faith’s honeymoon suite. Frequently the smell of flowers emanates from the empty room. Once, a staff member was standing in front of the room drinking coffee and talking about the legend when her coffee leaped from the cup and spilled over her hand. Others have had similar experiences while doing research on Faith and her story.
One recent guest, a young man, said he sensed someone in his room when he awoke. He drifted off, and awoke to someone hugging him. He asked if there had been incidents of haunting at the hotel. “Oh, that’s just Faith,” the desk clerk said. Others have experienced lights or the television going on in the middle of the night, or awaking to find their toothbrushes missing.
Faith never threatens in these encounters. The heartbroken ghost simply appears unable to move on. We like to think that even Faith likes staying at the Hassayampa Inn."
Yes, I know. They're push button phones. But aren't they just fun anyway?!
A little dizzy?
The building next door was originally a bank which the hotel now uses for conferences and events. The original vault is still downstairs.
Foyer looking down to the restaurants' art deco style Peacock Room. They have the best oatmeal. I knew you would want to know that!
Equipment used:
Canon 5D Mark II

He has hung up his lacrosse stick. Permanently. There are many layers to his decision... kind of like an onion... or a parfait. Moving on, before I start channeling Shrek. There's something amazing about watching your child transition past being 15. An awesome sense of humor, a great friend, an understated confidence, and completely comfortable in his own skin. But that's obvs from the picture right there! He's been working on a new form that has added 4 seconds to his time. Once he gets that down, it will swing back the other way and then some! In the meantime he was happy with the time he put up last week. Anyway, he has never been happier! Here's a few from last week's invitational:
To Be Continued... [Mesa, Gilbert Professional Photography]
I was cleaning out my desk. It needed it badly. And I came across a list of sessions and shoots to blog about. Let me rephrase that World Wide Web-- a list of things that should have been blogged about. Like..... a year ago! I look like Cousin It right now with my head hung in photographic shame. So I will be playing blog catchup. And don't fret. They are not sessions that clients have been patiently waiting for all these months! And since no post would be complete without a picture, here is proof of my loooong list of Bloggie to do's with a very Instagramish picture.
Be Happy,
Andrea

Today I'm going to boast about my friend and photographer, Khara Plicanic (don't worry, I still have trouble pronouncing it.) She is from Lincoln, Nebraska and is one of the best wedding photographers in her area! I've been able to spend time with her twice here in Arizona and I love that a Nebraska girl thinks Arizona is cool enough to visit. But the coolest thing about Khara?... This past year her and her husband biked all the way across the country!! I'm not kidding World Wide Web, they biked from California to Florida and held photography workshops along the way. Who couldn't be impressed with that! Her next feat? Recently showing up in the pages of PPA magazine. (Remember what PPA stands for? I'll give you a hint: Professional Photographers of America.) Khara, you're awesome! Be sure to check out her website and leave her some blog love down below!
Friday Files Vol 9: Book Smart [Mesa, Gilbert Professional Photography]
Earlier this year I took up reading again. I was an avid reader as a girl, but somehow just quit reading along the way. I have found it's a great way to relax, take your mind off things, and get those eyes tired for sleeping! As a girl I was so jealous of librarians as they obviously had the best job in the world. I was jealous that they might get first dibs on the newest book. And the best part: stamping the books with a due date on those cream colored library cards! I went back and forth as to which ones were better- the white or cream? I even saved my money to go to the little local drugstore and bought my own date stamp. My mom would drop me off and let me have an hour to lose myself among the land of the lending. Then there was the card catalogue. Oh the card catalogue! It was a scavenger hunt that made me feel I had won a prize when I found what I was looking for. I liked to see how fast I could search! So, here I am, taking up reading again. It seemed appropriate that I start where I began. Not Dick and Jane though. That's so first grade!
Island of the Blue Dolphins- I can't tell you how many times I've read this book. Gazillions. I'm sure of it. Even my husband picked it up. I forgot to ask what he thought of it though. It was a first for this type of book as it has no dialogue. A Newbery Award winner, you have to depend on her interior voice. It always keeps you wondering what will happen to her next. The main character may be a girl, but everything that happens to her is oh so 'boy.' It brought me comfort, when as a girl, I felt I needed some solitary time. This book should be required reading and will always remain a part of me.
Little House in the Big Woods- I loved this series as a girl and read each one over and over and over. I mean, who didn't have a crush on Almanzo! I secretly hoped that he would jump out the pages and whisk me away to a cabin on the prairie. Pretty sure he was my first love. (Sorry David from 1st grade who moved to Texas mid-year and I can't remember your last name.) I have to admit that this time around, it didn't move me like it used to. As a classic though, it deserves my respect.
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet- Oh. My. Gosh!!! What a mesmerizing read! The protagonist plays a dual role here. He is telling the story as a chinese boy in Seattle just before World War II. Close by, was Japantown. At the same time we are following him 40 years later. The characters are so well developed it has you hanging for more. It held me captive to the final pages and had me wishing for just 1 or 2 more chapters. This book makes you think and feel at the same time. Talk about a "tale of loyalties and timeless devotion." Go read this book!
Be Happy.
Friday Files Vol 8: [Mesa, Gilbert Professional Photography]
Happy Birthday Canon! I'm not talking about Canon cameras, I'm talking about our dog, although he was named after my camera! He was the most adorable-est puppy eh-vah! His birthday was last week so I thought I would do a then and now tribute to our cute canine!
The morning after we brought him home he made his photographic debut! Can you stand it!!
He has been a great student of puppy learning! He was sleeping through the night after 1 week. He was fully potty trained at 1 month. By 9 months he had mastered: no, sit, lay down, leave it, rabbit (somehow his word for toy), stay, not to jump on people, go, drop it/let go, treat, go lay down (in his room), leaves shoes and socks alone, and most recently controlling his indoor voice (barking)! He loves a sunny spot and never seems to tire of playing. We think he will train well for his natural-born agility abilities! He knows when pool guy Jon shows up and likes hanging out with him. Dislikes: chaos and swimming in the pool. Have you ever seen a dog stressed out? Not a big fan of walks but loves to go run around the front yard and be chased. World Wide Web, you have never seen a dog run so fast and turn on a dime! Watching him will make you as dizzy as that ride from the Sandlot movie! His most favorite favorite favorite thing in the whole wide dog world are bully sticks!!! Don't ask me to tell you what they are, that's what Google's for! And it's the only time he becomes territorial. He just doesn't seem to get that we have no interest in his bully stick!! Next up... learning to become a fur-ocious pigeon hunter!
Be Happy.
Happy Birthday, Canon-wanon, puppy-wuppy!!!
Painted Ladies [Mesa, Gilbert Professional Photography]
It's not all work and no play! But let me share the conditions where we were playing: It had been a comfortable 115º that day. As I rounded the mountain towards Fountain Hills, a 5 minute downpour brought the temp to an envious 87º. The thing about these quick downpours is they don't really cool things down. It tricks you into doing that closed eyes with a deep breath and then a sigh kind of thing. Sorta like when you're at the beach and you just want to soak it all in. I got tricked. We were shooting in a wash. Not a normal wash. This one had pretty steep, sandy walls with a massive amount of scrub brush. I had worn my flip flops thinking it was going to be one of those nice and wide and evenly sloped and maintained because it's fairly close to the city and the city wants it look maintained kind of washes. It was definitely not the flip flop kind of wash. Moving on... the rain ended and the temperature quickly climbed back up as fast as a monkey racing for the last banana. But the humidity hung around. And then it hit- the wash was a low enough down that there was no air movement. Let me say that again in case you didn't catch me spreading my hands out by my head with crazy eyes... there was no air movement!!! It was suffocating. We had to have the models rotate pretty quick for breaks to cool down. Not the photographers. The thing about photographers is they won't stop. They'll do anything for the shot and I mean anything! It's completely gross to look like you jumped in the pool with your clothes on kind of sweat. Tawny from Arte Del Amor created the painted art for our models. Not sure how she did it, but the paint never slid down our models faces. She's just awesome that way. Shall we move on to the images? Just make sure you scroll all the way down to see my most favorite-ist image!
This was a conceptual idea by Robin. When I asked her about the idea she said, "I grew up watching horror movies!"
My interpretation.
Ever wonder what a shoot looks likes behind the scenes? Glamourous eh? If you look close you'll see the fan we dragged out for the girls. This lovely pair of images are featuring Crissy and Melinda. See that red cooler in the bottom image? It was full of water. When we left it was pretty easy to carry because it was empty!
This shot was a little more on the complicated side. It was pitch black out. We used a flashlight to get our autofocus. Then, without moving we switched it to manual focus. The reason for this is as soon as you turn off the flashlight, the auto focus tries to refocus and can't. But it was sooo dark that you can't get your manual focus either. We had a strobe connected on a battery pack and used a large diffuser panel in front of it. Wish I had a behind the scenes shot of this image for you. Right after this we packed up and got out of there. We could hear the coyotes coming.
You made it to the end! And now, my favorite-ist image of the night:
Haboob
I personally feel like the word haboob is overused. But this one qualifies. I've titled this "Dirt Volcano."
